About the chef

A young, inventive chef with an old southern soul, Executive Chef Shanita McAfee-Bryant channels her mother’s love for heritage recipes with her grandfather’s passion for culinary adventure.

Passionate

“I grew up in a family of great cooks who believed that dinner time was the most enjoyable part of the day – of life”, says Shanita. “I learned that food is only truly wonderful when you can taste the love that went into it.”

Competitive

Shanita’s passion for food and cooking started with the homemade crust she made for an apple pie at the age of 13.  Just four years later with a new baby in tow she trained at The Culinary Institute at Johnson County Community College. She has gone on to win numerous awards for her creativity and style in the kitchen, and recently put her drive and competitiveness on display as a winner and last chef standing on the Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen.”

Chef Shanita infuses every dish with her extensive knowledge and creative flair.

Respectfully Creative

“Southern Cuisine is the oldest and most developed of all regional American cooking styles,” she says. “I absolutely LOVE to cook flavorful recipes rooted in seasonal freshness and ethnic diversity. I honor the tradition of many old-school recipes, but give each and every dish my own creative flair.”

Focused on Family – hers and yours

When she is not cooking and creating Shanita enjoys spending time with her husband, five children and working on her first cookbook which will feature some of her favorite recipes. Shanita is active on most social media outlets and blogs often about her life as Kansas City’s First African American female Executive Chef.

Philosophy

Southern Cuisine is the oldest and most developed of all regional American cooking styles. Its culinary tradition is based on seasonal freshness, ethnic diversity, simply prepared, highly flavored food. For these reasons, it has become one of America’s favorite ways to dine. At Magnolia’s, we honor the southern tradition in Kansas City by creating menus that combine the purest flavors, the freshest ingredients and the highest quality herbs and spices with a Southern dash of culinary passion.

We are mindful that you can choose to patronize a variety of other establishments. When you entrust your dining experience to Magnolia’s, you can expect to be pleased. Our desire is to consistently exceed your expectations and make you feel like a welcome guest in our home. We are grateful for the opportunity to share this celebration of food and life.
